Cavaliers fall flat against Horned Frogs

You knew things were going to be bad when this happened:
Indeed, Cav-Man falling off his horse before the game even began proved to be an excellent example of foreshadowing Saturday afternoon at Scott Stadium. Virginia fell to 0-2 after a drubbing at the hands of #16 TCU, 30-14.
The game wasn’t even as close as the score indicated. TCU scored the first 30 points, and did so with ease. The Frogs, who didn’t play last week and were opening their season in Charlottesville, were in control of the game after a muffed field goal by the Cavaliers in the first quarter. That would be as close as Virginia would come to scoring until the final minutes of the contest.
Scott Stadium was rocking after TCU fumbled on its first possession, but the UVa offense, led by Jameel Sewell, couldn’t capitalize, and the aforementioned botched snap sucked the air out of the stands. The Cavalier defense held strong for a while–the score was still 0-0 after 1 quarter–but the offense’s inability to sustain a drive led to an exhausted Virginia defense and a big TCU lead shortly after.
There are plenty of questions about the inept offense, not the least of which is: why not throw the ball down the field? Virginia employed that strategy exactly twice–both in the final minutes of the game, and they both resulted in touchdowns. Had they done it earlier, would they have been able to move the ball?
That’s just one of the many things Al Groh –who continues to be on the proverbial “hot seat”–must figure out before next week’s game at Southern Miss.
