A Look At: Volleyball
The Virginia volleyball team has had its share of exciting wins this season. It seems, however, that each thrilling victory is followed by a deflating defeat.
The Cavaliers have posted a 7-11 record this season, but are only 2-5 in ACC play and 0-2 against ranked opponents. They have played well in the familiar surroundings of Memorial Gymnasium, though, and have tallied big wins against in-state rivals VCU and Virginia Tech.
Coach Lee Maes’ squad has played in four tournaments, and in each except the Jefferson Cup (consisting of VCU, NC Central, and Campbell), the Cavs have gone 1-2. They have struggled mightily on the road–both ACC wins came at Mem Gym–and have recently suffered 0-3 losses to North Carolina, Duke, Florida State, and Albany.
In fact, the majority of Virginia’s matches have been 3-0 or 0-3 blowouts, further adding to the team’s inconsistent tendencies.
Still, the Cavaliers have won enough games that they still have plenty of time to salvage their season. Thirteen regular season games remain. Six of those are at home, and all 13 are ACC matches, so Virginia can finish very strong if they harness their abilities over the final month.
