The Finest Basketball Throwback, Volume 5

The first volume, as some of you might remember, was Michael Jordan’s red Chicago Bulls jersey with black writing from the first couple years of his career. There was not a better way to start this column off than with the greatest player of all-time’s jersey being honored. That said I want to reiterate that I am a New York Knicks fan not a Chicago Bulls fan, even if the number of Bulls jerseys written about in this column is currently greater than the number of Knicks jerseys. After a Decade without him, I felt that honoring Dennis “The Worm” Rodman’s black Chicago Bulls jersey with red pinstripes as a throwback was fitting.
Though more widely known for his on-court appearance (if you do not know what I am talking about, click here) and off-court escapades (if you do not know what I am talking about, click here), no one should forget that Rodman was one of the greatest rebounders and defenders of all-time. A very gritty player, he was an NBA All-Defensive First Team selection and the league leader in rebounds seven times as well as NBA Defensive Player of the Year twice. He played a vital role for both the Detroit Pistons (two times) and later the Chicago Bulls (three times) on the way to winning five NBA Championships.
In terms of the jersey, as you have probably noticed from the other volumes, I am a fan of any color scheme involving at least two of black, white, and red. This jersey is special in that it says Bulls instead of Chicago like the similar styled current Bulls alternate road jersey and has red pinstripes (if you can’t see the pinstripes on the jersey in the photo, they are more apparent here). Next to an ugly jersey like the purple and white Bucks jersey Mitch Richmond is wearing in the photo, it looks even better. No Rodman jersey was ever complete without a ridiculous dye job either (immortalized in the best basketball video game; NBA Jam TE). After the first three volumes made sure to honor three of the greatest there were and the fourth volume honored the good job the NBA has been doing as of late with their faux-backs, this fifth volume shows that you do not have to be the best ever to get honored for having an excellent basketball jersey.
