Men’s Tennis Win First Three Outdoor Matches
The Men’s tennis team started off the outdoor section of their season with three wins against Old Dominion, Georgetown and No. 4 Texas at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville last weekend.
The top-ranked Cavaliers began Friday against the Monarchs, sweeping them eight to zero. They followed up on their momentum defeating the Hoyas nine to zero.
Sunday’s match against Texas was played using an alternative scoring system. The match was played with a possible thirteen points up for grabs, with nine singles matches and four doubles matches all worth a point each. Fourth-ranked Texas was the highest ranked opponent to be hosted by Virginia in a non-tournament match during Head Coach Brian Boland’s time.
The Cavaliers started out well by winning three of the four doubles matches. The 21st-ranked pair of Michael Shabaz and Drew Courtney beat the Longhorn pair of fourth-ranked Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala 9-7.
Virginia went on to win six of the nine singles matches. Top- ranked Sanam Singh played his first game of the weekend, defeating 10th ranked Ed Corrie in straight sets 6-2 6-4. Overall the team came out on top by nine points to four, marking their 62nd consecutive home win.
Next up for the men’s team is a visit to ACC rivals Maryland on March 19th.
