Men’s Tennis Team Crowned ACC Champions

mtennis_playersvgmedThe No. 1Virginia men’s tennis team retained the ACC Championship for the fourth consecutive time with wins against Miami, Georgia Tech and Duke in Cary N.C. over the weekend.

The top-seeded Virginia’s tournament began in the Quarterfinals against No. 42 Miami on Friday. They swept their opposition 4-0 to advance to the semifinals.

The Cavaliers then faced the No. 24 Yellow Jackets on Saturday, and defeated them 4-1 to advance to their seventh consecutive ACC Tournament final.

In the final on Sunday, Virginia faced No. 17 Duke. In what was a closely contested singles section, the team edged out the win 4-2 to claim the Championship. This is the Cavaliers fourth consecutive title and the sixth title in the last seven years.

The win also extended Virginia’s conference-record winning streak to 61. As well as this, the victory raised the season’s total of 35 wins, improving on the Schools record for a season.

Senior Houston Barrick was named the tournament MVP.

Next up, the tennis team can look forward to the NCAA Tournament, having clinched the ACC’s automatic bid with the Championship win. The draw for the tournament will be announced on May 4.
