Cavalier Sports Week in Review; May 16th – 23rd
University of Virginia sports fans had a lot to be proud of this week as seven teams played in NCAA Tournaments and one team clinched the outright ACC Coastal Division title.
Golf
The women’s golf team, which is only seven years old, finished 13th out of 24 at the NCAA Championship. The team’s top two players are both first years, and of the five that went to the NCAA Championship, none graduated today. The team will look to improve upon this performance next year with so many returning players and extend their consecutive years in the NCAA Championship to four. The men’s golf team also impressed this week, finishing 5th out of 14 in the NCAA Regionals, which qualified them for the NCAA Championships to be held June 2nd – 5th. The Cavaliers have a second year, three third years, and a fourth year representing them at the NCAA Tournament. Like the women’s golf team, this will be the third consecutive NCAA Championship appearance for the men’s golf team.
Lacrosse
After such tragedy it is often hard to get back on the field and play, let alone win. The #4 UVA women’s lacrosse team did just that though, beating #11 Towson last Sunday. Sadly their season ended this past Saturday in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals in a loss to #3 UNC. Win or lose, the fact that they were able to get out on the field and play as well as they did in their two NCAA Tournament games deserves recognition. Today the #1 men’s lacrosse team faced a scrappy #8 Stony Brook at Stony Brook and came away victorious 10-9. It is the third consecutive trip to the semifinals for the Cavaliers. They will face the only team that has beaten them this year, #5 Duke on Saturday, May 29.
Softball / Baseball
The UVA softball team started off the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 win over Louisville on Friday. Unfortunately, Saturday brought losses to both Tennessee and Louisville which spelled the end for their first NCAA Tournament appearance. The #1 baseball team took two of three games from #14 Miami at Miami in their final series of the regular season. The wins solidified UVA’s ACC Coastal Division title as outright and not shared with Georgia Tech. The wins also gave UVA the most conference wins in a baseball season ever, finishing the season 45-10, 23-7 in ACC play. The ACC Tournament is this coming Wednesday, May 26 to Sunday, May 30 and UVA will be the number one seed for the first since 1985 (and second time ever).
Tennis
The women’s tennis team lost last week in the second round of the NCAA Regionals to Duke, but the #1 men’s tennis has continued their dominance in the NCAA Tournament and got revenge for the women’s team as this week saw them beat #16 Duke 4-0. After beating Duke on Friday, the UVA men’s tennis team beat #9 UCLA today to reach the NCAA Tournament Semifinals. The win brought their record to 39-1 and sets up a match tomorrow (Monday, May 24) against #5 Southern California.
