Cavalier Sports Week in Review; May 24th – 31st
This week was yet another successful week in UVA Sports, including another National Championship, which now brings UVA’s total count to twenty. It also yielded an individual national title for UVA Men’s tennis in doubles. With the #5 seed earned by the baseball team and the Men’s Golf team in action this week (June 2nd – 5th), who knows maybe a twenty first or twenty second National Championship is on the way.
Baseball
After being named the number one seed in the ACC Tournament for only the second time in school history and the first time since 1985, UVA Men’s Baseball had high hopes. After winning the first game 6-4 on Wednesday, May 26 against Boston College in Greensboro, North Carolina, the Cavaliers came up short in the second game on Thursday, May 27 against Florida State; losing 11-4. On Saturday, May 29, The Cavaliers needed to beat Miami in the third game and Boston College had to beat Florida State. Though the UVA Men’s Baseball team won 12-8, Florida State beat Boston College, eliminating UVA. Florida State went on to beat North Carolina State in the final of the ACC tournament. The season is not over though, as UVA has been given the #5 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and will host the NCAA Charlottesville Regional June 4th – 7th. The other teams in the region are Virginia Commonwealth University, Ole Miss, and St. John’s. The Cavaliers will look to continue their recent run of results (having won 18 of their last 20) and keep up their homefield advantage (having won 30 of 34 at home this season).
Lacrosse
After squeaking by in the quarterfinals in Stony Brook last week, the #1 seeded UVA Men’s Lacrosse team fell for the second time this season to #5 Duke, this time in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament 14-13. It was a hard fought game that ended in heartbreaking fashion as Duke scored the game winning goal with 12 seconds left. The ACC Tournament Champions UVA Men’s Lacrosse finished the season 16-2. #5 Duke went on the win the National Championship over Notre Dame in Overtime.
Rowing
UVA Rowing (there’s only a Women’s team, the Men’s team is a club sport) won the NCAA Rowing Championship for the first time in school history. The team won the ACC Rowing Championship earlier in the season as well. Crew teams consist of a Varsity Eight, a second Varsity Eight, and a Varsity Four. The Varsity Four finished the season undefeated by winning their race, the Second Varsity Eight finished fourth, and the Varsity Eight finished in second which was enough to give them the team title.
Tennis
The #1 UVA Men’s Tennis team ended their season 39-2 after losing to reigning national champions and eventual national champions #5 USC in the NCAA Championship Semifinals. In the NCAA Men’s Singles Championships, Drew Courtney and Jarmere Jenkins won their first round matchup before losing in the second round, Sanam Singh won his first and second round matchups before losing in the round of 16, and Michael Shabaz won his first three matches before losing in the quarterfinals. In the NCAA Men’s Doubles Championships, Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz teamed up and won the title. It was Shabaz’s second straight NCAA Men’s Doubles title, beating the opposition of John-Patrick Smith and Davey Sandgren of Tennessee for the second time as well.

Nine UVA runners qualified for the NCAA Championships after strong showings at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. The Nine Runners are Fourth Years Meghan Birggs and Steve Delice, Third Years Steve Finley, Marcus Robinson, Ryan Collins, and Andy Fahringer, Second Years Tara Karin and Lance Roller, and First Year Robby Andrews. The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place between June 9th and 12th.
