Cavalier Sports Weekly Roundup

Welcome to your weekly update on all things Virginia Sports. It was an awfully good week for the ‘Hoos, and not just on the gridiron…

Field Hockey

The third-ranked Cavaliers picked up two more victories on Sunday (5-2 over #16 Old Dominion) and Monday (2-0 over Northwestern). The victories improved the ladies’ record to 4-0, and junior Paige Selenski was named National Player of the Week for scoring 6 goals in the two wins.

The team travels to Norfolk this weekend to take on Ohio State (Saturday at 11AM) and Syracuse (Sunday at noon).

Men’s Soccer

The defending national champs got off to a bit of a shaky start in Friday night’s season opener against UAB at Klockner Stadium, but they rallied from a 1-0 deficit to by scoring twice late (the second coming on a nifty Will Bates header) to knock off the Blazers and prevent an upset. The men returned to form on Sunday, when they cruised to a 5-0 victory over 17th ranked St. Johns.

Next up for the ‘Hoos: a road trip to Duke for the ACC opener on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7 PM.

Women’s Soccer

The women improved on their 3-0-1 record with a blowout 8-0 win Friday night against Richmond. After the men hosted this past weekend, the women will host their version of the Nike Soccer Classic this weekend at Klockner. They’ll take on Texas Friday night at 7PM and Boston University Sunday at 2PM.

Volleyball

The volleyball team had the dubious distinction of being the first Virginia team to lose an event this year (as Field Hockey, M&W Soccer, and Football are all undefeated), but it didn’t come until after an impressive 5-0 start. The Cavaliers won twice on Friday, knocking off Liberty and North Florida in the Jefferson Cup (hosted at Mem Gym). They fell to George Washington on Saturday, but still managed to take the tournament title despite the loss.

Just like their football counterparts, the Cavs will travel out to California this weekend. They play San Diego on Thursday, USC on Friday, and Long Beach State on Saturday.

Football

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days, the team opened the season with an impressive 34-13 home victory over Richmond. The next game is Saturday night at USC (kickoff at 10:30 PM EST).

Men’s Basketball

The 2010-2011 season schedule has been released. Some notes:

  • The season opener will be Friday, November 12 at 7PM against William and Mary (but there’s an exhibition game vs. Roanoke College on Saturday, November 6th).
  • Notable non-conference contests: at Stanford, at Minnesota, vs. Oregon, vs. Iowa State, vs. LSU.
  • The team will travel to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational Nov 22-24, and will play three difficult non-conference games there as well. Here is the bracket for the tournament.
  • Notable ACC home games: UNC (1/8/10), Maryland (1/27), Duke (2/16), Virginia Tech (2/19).
