Virginia Men’s Club Soccer Season Openers
The Virginia Men’s Club Soccer Team opened their season this weekend with 2 strong victories over George Washington University and the University of Richmond. The team traveled to the University of Richmond where they first squared off against GW, followed shortly by U of R.
The Cavaliers got off to a slow start against GW in what proved to be an uneventful first half. Virginia was able to control possession of the ball, but struggled to find the back of the net.
After making adjustments at halftime, the Cavs found their stride and netted 3 goals in the second half. Doug Lawrence got the scoring started by tucking a well driven ball into the side of the net. Matt Ganyard and Andy Coulson also added goals to solidify the team’s first victory of the season 3-0. The defense recorded their first shutout of the season anchored by Matt Weiler, Jonathan Wilson and Keeper Matt Owen.
After a short 20 minute break between games, the Cavaliers took the field again vs. the Richmond Spiders. Lawrence found the back of the net early in this game, capitalizing off of a long throw-in which deflected off a Richmond defender and into the goal. Ganyard added a penalty minutes later to give Virginia a 2-0 advantage. James Ramadan added a 3rd goal for the Cavaliers after nailing a free kick into the upper left corner of the goal. The Spiders had a number of scoring chances in the first half, including one shot which hit the post, but were unable to break through the Virginia defense.
Richmond came out an invigorated team in the 2nd half and put Virginia on their heels. The Spiders were able to control the majority of possession against a physically exhausted Virginia team. Richmond scored 2 goals to make the score 3-2 but were unable to find the net a 3rd time as the Virginia defense held strong to preserve the victory.
With a record of 2-0-0, the Virginia Men’s Club Soccer Team continues their season next Sunday Sept. 19th with games against Va Tech at 12pm and the Washington Dynasty at 6pm at Carr’s Hill Field.
