Cavaliers look to weather the Hurricanes

This Saturday at noon the Virginia Cavaliers will take on the Hurricanes of the University of Miami. Last weekend at Scott Stadium the Cavaliers brought the hurt on the Eastern Michigan Eagles with a convincing 48-21 victory. Despite allowing 290 yards on the ground, the Cavaliers found a way to fight back and halt their losing streak with contributions from a wide range of offensive players. The team will face a significantly tougher opponent this weekend against the Hurricanes. Miami is currently ranked 22nd in AP polls and posted a convincing win against North Carolina last weekend with a score of 33-10.

The Hurricanes post a 5-2 overall record with losses coming to #2 Ohio State and #23 Florida State. They also hold a 3-1 ACC record, which is good for second place behind Virginia Tech. They need another win to become bowl eligible, which should be a motivating factor in this game. On the same note, the Hoos have a 3-4 record and are looking for their first win in the ACC.

Miami brings a stifling defense and solid offense to the table. Jacory Harris, Miami’s quarterback, only posts a 53.9 completion percentage but has scored 14 touchdowns for the ‘Canes. They also have standout offensive players in Damien Berry and Leonard Hankerson. Miami’s defensive corps is ranked 17th in the nation and has limited their opponents to 18 points and 302 yards per game. Marc Verica will be starting this week after a strong performance last week, but the Wahoo to watch for is Keith Payne who has 10 touchdowns on the year and will be called upon to move the offense down the field.

In Monday press conference, head coach Mike London stressed that he wanted the Cavaliers to improve on their third down and red zone efficiency so that the offense can sustain drives and score more points.

The big question this Saturday will be if UVA can manage to stop Miami’s offensive attack. Jacory Harris is prone to mistakes and has thrown 10 interceptions this year to date. If they can keep the game close and the pressure on Harris, it will take the pressure off Verica, hopefully keeping interceptions and turnovers to a minimum for the Hoos.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN with kickoff at noon.
