2010-11 ACC Basketball Preview: Florida State
With basketball season gearing up, Wahoo Wire will be previewing each ACC team.
Florida State Seminoles
What they lost:
The biggest loss the Seminoles are forced to deal with is the departure of their starting center, Solomon Alibi, who declared for the draft and was selected by the Raptors. He lead the team last year in points, offensive rebounds and blocks (374, 79, and 75 respectively). His impact in the paint will be hard to replace seeing as how he was one of the key reasons other teams feared the FSU defense last year.
What they gained:
This year the Seminoles were able to get a commitment from Okaro White a 6’8 power forward out of Clearwater, FL. White was ranked 36th in the nation overall and #10 at his position last year by ESPN. He’s a solid player and will able to add more defense to the team with his rebounding and blocking skill; he’s still a freshmen and has a long way to go on his progression but he’ll prove to add more depth to FSU.
Summary:
FSU should definitely be considered as a sleeper this year in the ACC for the title. The Seminoles have had 20 wins over the past two seasons which is second only to Duke. That in addition to Coach Hamilton getting a solid recruiting class makes the team a threat now and a few years down the road. Chris Singleton, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, returns this and if he can improve his offensive game, could even be a contender for some bigger accolades. All in all expect FSU to miss the absence of Alibi, but will still do well in the ACC finishing in the top 5.
