2010-11 ACC Basketball Preview: Georgia Tech
With basketball season gearing up, Wahoo Wire will be previewing each ACC team.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
What they lost:
Coming into the season, Georgia Tech had 3 of their 4 leading scores either graduate or declare for the draft. Most notably Derrick Favors who is now playing for the New Jersey Nets and Gani Lawal who signed with the Phoenix Suns. Lawal led his team in both points (471) and rebounds (305) last year and will be sorely missed. Favors also averaged 12.4 points per game and lead the team with 74 blocks as well as getting 303 rebounds last season. Coach Paul Hewitt almost left in the off season to St. John’s, but turned down the job offer.
What they gained:
The Yellow Jackets top recruit is small forward Jason Morris. The 6’5’’ 205 lbs Georgia native was ranked 15th at his position and is thought to hold much potential. Throughout his high school career, however, he’s been able to get by on pure athleticism but college won’t be that easy. Morris has a good shot, but too often he looks for the big play as opposed to simply being efficient. Under coach Hewitt, he should mature and grow into his potential.
With the loss of the majority of their top players, the Yellow Jackets are going to have a tough season ahead. All isn’t lost, though, because, lucky for Tech, they still have the three year starter Iman Shumpert playing at guard. He averaged 10 points a game last year in addition to leading the team in assists with 120. Unfortunately for Yellow Jacket fans, this year’s season will not see a repeat of their 23 wins last year and, in fact, they will most likely finish in the bottom half of the ACC. It’s safe to say this season is a rebuilding one because their loss of personnel may be too great to overcome.
