Men’s Club Soccer Spring Opener
The UVA Men’s Club Soccer Team competed in its first round robin tournament of the spring this past weekend at Carrs Hill Field. The Cavaliers played host to James Madison University and the Dynasty FC. Coming off of an exciting and successful fall season, in which the Cavs advanced to the quarterfinals at the National Tournament in Arizona, UVA was excited to get back into action.
In the first game, UVA played against the JMU Dukes. Falling behind early, the Cavaliers were able to compose themselves and capitalize off of a goalie error to square the game at one goal apiece. As the game seemed to be headed towards a 1-1 tie, the Dukes were able to sneak in a goal off of a 2 on 1 counterattack. However, in the last few minutes of the game, a free kick sent into the box by Fernando De Faria, found the head of Puneet Bawa for the game-tying goal. The game ended in a 2-2 draw.
In their second game, the Cavaliers squared off against the Dynasty FC. After playing to a 0-0 tie at halftime, the Cavaliers broke the game open with 2 goals midway through the second half. Doug Lawrence scored first for UVA and was soon followed by Andy Coulson who netted his second goal of the day off of a breakaway.
Virginia opens the spring with a 1-0-1 record and is looking forward to their continued success.
