UVa Cavalier Baseball Sweeps Maryland Terrapins
The No. 3 ranked Cavalier baseball team swept the Maryland Terrapins with a 14-1 victory on Friday and a pair of 4-2 wins in a doubleheader on Saturday at Davenport Field.
“It’s hard in this league to sweep a series, let alone win 18 innings of baseball like we did today.” said Head Coach Brian O’Connor on Saturday.
On Friday Cavalier pitcher Danny Hultzen improved to 5-0 on the season, allowing only one run in six innings and nine strikeouts. Relief Pitcher Shane Halley pitched three scoreless innings in relief.
Maryland’s pitcher Sander Beck allowed 10 Cavalier runs in the fourth inning. Maryland’s poor defense lead to five errors in the game, contributing to the UVa victory.
Freshman Kyle Crockett picked up the win of the first game’s doubleheader in relief of starter Tyler Wilson. Senior Cody Winarksi pitched seven innings to pick up the second win.
In the second game of the series, Maryland jumped out to an early 2-0 lead within the first two innings. The Cavaliers did not get on the board until the bottom of the seventh on a David Coleman single.
The eighth inning ended the Terrapins lead. Chris Taylor and John Barr quickly got two groundouts making the count 2-0. John Hicks and Ryan Levine hit two grounders as well, but errors commited by Alfredo Rodriquez and Kyle Convissar helped keep the inning alive for the Cavaliers.
Steven Proscia, Kenny Swab and Jared King scored three runs giving the Cavaliers the 4-2 lead.
The third game Maryland got out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first and second.
The Cavaliers struck back in the bottom of the second with a four-run inning. With two outs and Swab on second base, the Cavaliers put its next four batter on base. Taylor hit a triple to left-center to give the Cavaliers a 3-2 lead. John Barr was then walked and Taylor was able to score on a Maryland wild pitch.
The Terrapins went five innings without a hit, and then scored in the eighth inning, but relief pitcher Justin Thompson struck out pinch hitter Tim Kiene to end the inning.
Justin Thompson pitched 1.1 scoreless innings. Branden Kline struck out the final two batters to earn two saves on the day and ten on the season.
The Cavaliers are 24-2 on the season and 8-1 in the ACC.
The UVa Baseball team has won 23 of their last 24 contents against Maryland. They are currently on a seven game winning streak dating back to the 2009 season.
The Cavaliers will be playing on Tuesday night at 5 pm against George Washington at Davenport Field. They will resume ACC play in Blacksburg this upcoming weekend.
