Men’s Soccer Falls to Liberty

Men’s soccer suffered their second loss of the season this week when they played Liberty at home on Tuesday. Following their disappointing start to the season against WVU, the team had redeemed themselves with a four game winning streak. This contest, though, ended with a 2-0 loss.

Both teams started off with a lot of energy, and it was unclear which team might have had the upper hand. Each had several shots on goal but none of those were finished.

The game was physical as usual and defender Hunter Jumper received a yellow card towards the end of the first half, adding to the team’s 8 so far this season. The score was still 0-0 at half time.
Virginia began so show some signs of fading and about halfway through the second half, Liberty’s Chris Philips finished an assist from Greg White for the first goal of the game.

The Cavaliers shook it off and got right back to work, determined to even out the score. Unfortunately, Liberty also stepped up their game and refused to let the Cavs come back. About 3 minutes after the first goal, Liberty scored again, this time it was Philip Aseweh assisted by Timothy Bullock.

Virginia seemed to be a bit flustered by the quick 1, 2 punch, however, they regrouped and finished the game strongly. The Cavs fought until the end but were unable to even up the score at all.
Jumper thought the team simply did not hold on the way they could have “At the beginning of the game you saw a flash of what we could do, but it just wasn’t enough, we need that to be 90 minutes of soccer”.

Head Coach George Gelnovatch judged their opponents to be “the best Liberty team we’ve played in my 16 seasons”. He hopes for some humbleness from his team as they prepare for their next game, Friday, against Charlotte.
