UVA Men’s Tennis Victorious at the Fall Classic

The University of Virginia Men’s Tennis team hosted the 2011 UVA Fall Classic, spanning October 14-16 at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville. 2 UVA doubles teams and 2 singles players won their respective draws, while 15 different schools competed in the Classic.

On the first day of the tournament all of the doubles matches were held. Virginia’s Drew Courtney and Julen Uriguen were victors of the Blue Doubles Draw. They overcome Alexis Huegas and Jaime Vazquez Catoira of VCU 8-5 in the final. Also, in the White Draw championship, the UVA pair Steven Rooda and Philippe Oudshoorn surpassed Virginia Tech’s Marko Lovrinovic and Trpimir Kujundzic 8-3.

The following day of matches featured several UVA players, successful in their quarterfinals, advancing to the last day of the tournament when the semifinal and final matches would be held. Among the players were Philippe Oudshoorn, Santiago Villegas, Julen Uriguen, and Justin Shane.

On Sunday, the singles champions of each draw were determined. En route to becoming the Blue Singles victor, Justin Shane downed Liberty’s Wayne Harrel 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals. In the championship match, Shane overpowered Filip Svensson from VCU 6-3, 7-5.

In addition, Philippe Oudshorn, also a doubles champion, became the Black Singles winner after rolling past Stijn Meulemans of Radforn 6-3, 6-2. He crushed John Banks from William & Mary 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinal match.

Unfortunately, after doubles champion Julen Uriguen was successful in his semifinal match in the Orange draw, with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Penn State’s Brien Welnetz, he had to retire before the final.

All in all, the 2011 UVA Fall Classic marked an impressive performance by the men’s tennis team, as they captured 4 titles overall. They next play in the ITA Atlantic Regional, which begins October 20th, again on the Snyder Courts of UVA.
