This edition of the roundup actually covers two weeks, since I took last week off during the break.

Football

UVa finished another rough season with losses at Boston College and Virginia Tech. The ‘Hoos finished the year 4-8, three wins short of bowl eligibility.

Men’s Basketball

It’s been quite a roller coaster road trip for the Cavaliers, starting off very low with two big losses at Stanford and against a high-octane Washington team in Maui. UVa rebounded with a blowout win over Oklahoma (granted, the Sooners lost to D-II Chaminade the following day), but couldn’t finish the Maui Invitaitonal on a high note when they fell to Wichita State (despite jumping out to a massive lead early on).

Monday night, Virginia headed north to Minneapolis to take on an undefeated, impressive Golden Gophers squad ranked as high as #13 in the country. What looked like it could have been a blowout early on stayed relatively close thanks to the hot shooting of Mustapha Farrakhan and Joe Harris, and Minnesota only led by 10 at the half. UVa played an incredible 20 minutes of basketball in the second half and stormed back to take the lead and pull away, scoring an awesome 87-79 upset.

The upstart Hoos kick off conference play in Blacksburg Sunday against Tech before heading back to non-conference action for nearly another month. A win and a 1-0 lead on the rest of the ACC would provide some serious momentum for the young Virginia squad.

Women’s Basketball

After defeating Longwood at home two Sundays ago, UVa traveled to the Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam tournament (and contests against three straight ranked opponents). The ‘Hoos came up short against #17 Iowa State and #10 WVU, but triumphed to conclude the tournament against #21 TCU. Another tough test away from JPJ awaits Virginia: #6 Ohio State on Thursday night in Columbus.

Cross Country

UVa finished 17th in men’s competition and 21st in women’s at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Indiana last Monday. Redshirt junior Ryan Collins finished 32nd overall and earned All-American honors.

Field Hockey

Yet another promising season ended in heartbreak for the Hoos, as #2 North Carolina beat #3 UVafor the third time this season. The defeat came in overtime of the NCAA semifinals in College Park, MD. Junior Paige Selenski was been named one of four semifinalists for the 2010 Honda Award for field hockey, given annually to the nation’s top player.

Women’s Soccer

The Cavs nearly mounted a dramatic comeback after falling behind 3-0 to Ohio State in the NCAA 3rd round, but it wasn’t enough and the Buckeyes eliminated Virginia last Saturday, 3-2.

Swimming and Diving

Virginia scored victories over Penn State and Indiana at the AFC in its most recent meet. Next up is the Georgia Invitational this weekend in Athens.

Volleyball

UVa concluded a very up-and down season with a win at Wake Forest and losses at Duke and Virginia Tech. UVa will not participate in postseason play.

Wrestling

The Cavaliers won one and lost two in the Northeast Duals last weekend in New York, defeating Columbia but falling to #11 Lehigh and #14 Pittsburgh.

Men’s Soccer

The Hoos’ attempt at a title defense quickly came to a close Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Klockner Stadium, as they were upset by Old Dominion 1-0. The loss completed a disappointing finish to the season for Virginia, which also lost to unranked NC State and rival Maryland (twice) before beginning NCAA play.

Women’s Soccer

Things are looking better for the ladies, however. Virginia hosted rounds 1 and 2 of the NCAA’s this weekend, and defeated Lehigh and South Carolina to advance to the round of 16 – which they will also host since #1 seeded Maryland was upset this weekend. The ‘Hoos will take on Ohio State on Saturday at Klockner.

Baseball

The 2011 schedule has been released and can be found here. Virginia begins the season February 18th in a tournament at Auburn.

Men’s Basketball

The ‘Hoos opened up the season with an exciting home win Friday night against William and Mary, then followed it up with an easy victory over USC Upstate Monday night. They will not see the friendly confines of JPJ until December 7th, however, and face a difficult road trip featuring Stanford, Washington and others at the Maui Invitational, Virginia Tech, and Minnesota.

Women’s Basketball

UVa won its opener on the road at Hofstra, and cruised to a win at home Sunday against Mt. St. Mary’s to improve to 2-0. The ladies dropped their first game of the season Thursday night at #4 Tennessee in a close, hard-fought battle. Virginia will return home Sunday to take on Longwood.

Field Hockey

UVa has had a stellar season, stumbling only against rival ACC foes in their biggest games of the season. They will get another shot at redemption this weekend at the NCAA Final Four in College Park, where they’ll have to go through #2UNC and likely #1Maryland to take home the title. UVa defeated Michigan State and Princeton this week to advance to the semis.

Volleyball

UVa lost at Clemson and Georgia Tech this week, falling to 13-14 overall and 7-10 in the league. Another road weekend awaits the Cavaliers, this time at Duke and Wake Forest.

Wrestling

Virginia ran its record to 6-0 with three wins at The Duals in Hershey, PA this weekend, defeating #14 Kent State, Edinboro, and the Citadel. UVa is ranked 21st, and the win over KSU marked the highest ranked opponent the Cavs have ever defeated.

Cross Country

The men’s team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships (held on Monday), while the women’s team automatically qualified by winning the Southeast Regional NCAA title. Women’s coach Jason Vigilante was named the Southeast Region Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Swimming/Diving

The men and women recorded victories over Virginia Tech and Princeton this weekend at the AFC. They host Indiana and Penn State this Friday and Saturday.

The Hoos continued their slump to finish the regular season, falling 2-0 at NC State and finishing sixth in the ACC a year after winning the NCAA title. UVa rebounded, however, with an impressive 1-0 victory over 3rd seeded Wake Forest on Wednesday in the first round of the ACC Tournament. The win gives the Cavs the right to a rematch with Maryland (the Terps embarrassed Virginia at Klockner earlier this year) Friday at 5:30 PM in Cary, NC.

Women’s Soccer

The women fell 1-0 to Boston College in the ACC quarters, but still earned a solid #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, along with the honor of hosting the first two rounds. The Cavs will play Lehigh at 5PM on Friday, and will battle the winner of South Carolina and UNC Greensboro on Sunday should they advance.

Football

UVa lost to Duke. Enough about that already. Next up is Maryland at 3:30 on Saturday in the final home game of the season.

Men’s Basketball

The Hoos had no trouble in an easy exhibition victory over Roanoke College Saturday at JPJ, outscoring the Maroons 82-50. The season opener is Friday night, at home against William and Mary.

Wrestling

#22 Virginia destroyed the competition on Saturday at Mem Gym, cruising to season-opening match wins over Anderson, Gardner-Webb, and Rider. Virginia lost just one of its 30 bouts, with the lone defeat coming in a forfeit. Next up: the Hershey Duals in Pennsylvania on Nov. 13.

Volleyball

The up-and-down UVa Volleyball season continued this weekend, as the Hoos were swept at home by Maryland (a team they previously swept), but followed it up with a sweep of their own against Boston College on Senior Day. UVa (13-12, 7-8) finishes the year with a five-game road trip starting Friday.

Field Hockey

The Cavaliers handled sixth seeded Duke in their opening-round ACC tournament game, but lost another heartbreaker to the Tar Heels of North Carolina in overtime in the semis, 1-0. Virginia hosts the Charlottesville regional of the NCAA tournament this weekend, taking on Michigan State Saturday and potentially the winner of Princeton and Wake Forest on Sunday.

Cross Country

UVa’s Brett Johnson won the Cavalier Open Friday, marking his first career victory. UVa heads to Louisville next for the NCAA Regionals.

Men’s Tennis

Senior Michael Shabaz had his historic run at the Virginia National Bank Tennis Championships come to an end on Sunday. He fell to world No. 149 Robert Kendrick 6-2, 6-3 in the singles final of the ATP Challenger Tour event. Shabaz was the first collegiate player to reach the final since 1987.

Women’s Soccer

Virginia wrapped up its 2010 home schedule with a 2-1 victory over NC State on Thursday. The road finale, however, was a truly dominant performance: a 6-0 triumph at Clemson. UVa finished 13-3-2 (7-2-1 ACC) and begins its quest to an ACC Tournament title Wednesday night against Boston College.

Football

The Cavaliers pulled off a stunning upset at home Saturday, shocking 22nd ranked Miami 24-19. Virginia will look to run its win streak to 3 Saturday at Duke. Kickoff is at noon in Durham.

Field Hockey

#3 Virginia finished up the regular season with a 3-1 win at #18 Duke, and the Cavaliers sit at 15-2 (3-2) heading into postseason play. Their first-round game of the ACC Tournament is Thursday at 3:30 PM against those same Blue Devils, now ranked #6.

Men’s Soccer

It continues to become painfully clear to Virginia fans that this is not the same team that won a thrilling national title last season. In arguably their biggest match of the year, the Hoos fell flat against a clearly superior Maryland team 0-2 on Friday night at Klockner. UVa, now ranked #10, rebounded with a 4-1 win over Campbell on Senior Night Tuesday to improve to 10-3-3 (2-3-2). The season finale is Saturday night at NC State.

Volleyball

It was a VERY impressive weekend for Virginia Volleyball, featuring home wins over Miami (3-1) and #25 Florida State (3-2). The win marked coach Lee Maes’ first victory over a ranked opponent, and Virginia’s first since 1996. UVa is now 12-11 (6-7) with home matches vs. Maryland and Boston College on tap this weekend.

Men’s Swimming

UVa honored former Cavalier swimmer Fran Crippen before its first meet since Crippen’s passing, and followed up with a 156-136 victory over Navy at the AFC. Next up for the 2-0 Cavaliers is a tri-meet with Virginia Tech and Princeton Nov. 12-13.

Cross Country

Senior All-American Emil Heineking earned his second-straight ACC individual cross country title at the conference championships Saturday in Boston, while the women’s team fought its way to a surprising second-place finish. The men placed fourth. The teams return home for the Cavalier Open on Friday.

Rowing

UVa finished 2nd, 4th, 5th, 16th, and 27th (out of 45) with its five crews in the Varisty Eight event at the Princeton Chase Sunday. The Novice Eight team won its race.

The fall season concludes Nov. 14 with the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville.

The Virginia rowing team competed at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J., on Sunday. The Cavaliers had five crews compete in the Varsity Eight event and finished second, fourth, fifth, 16th and 27th.

Additionally, UVa’s Novice Eight won its race at the regatta.

Football

In the first college game in NCAA Division-1 level history between two teams with both African-American head coaches and athletic directors, Virginia overcame some early struggles to steamroll Eastern Michigan, 48-21. UVa looks for its first ACC win this Saturday against Miami. The game is set for a noon kickoff at Scott Stadium and will be televised on ESPN.

Women’s Soccer

It was a pretty solid weekend in the Sunshine State for the 7th ranked Cavaliers, as they earned a scoreless draw at 10th ranked Florida State on Thursday and smoked Miami 4-1 on Sunday. Next up for Virginia 11-3-2 (5-2-1 ACC) is the final home game of the season, Thursday night against NC State.

Men’s Soccer

The men also earned a hard-fought draw on the road this weekend, tying Boston College 1-1 on Friday night. The third ranked ‘Hoos are home for a huge contest against Maryland on Friday night at Klockner Stadium.

Rowing

The reigning NCAA champs kicked off fall competition at the Head of the Charles in Boston Sunday, and emerged relatively successful. UVa’s two entries in the Championship Eights race finished 2nd and 8th, while the Cavalier Championship Fours finished 5th and 17th.

Volleyball

Virginia earned a split in the state of North Carolina over the weekend, defeating NC State 3-0 and falling to UNC 0-3. UVa now sits at 10-11 on the year (3-7 in the ACC), and will host Miami and Florida State this weekend at Mem Gym.

Field Hockey

The Cavaliers wrapped up their home schedule in style, defeating 14th ranked Wake Forest 4-1 on Saturday and shutting out Radford 8-0 on Sunday (Senior Day). Third-ranked UVa finishes up the regular season Saturday at Duke.

Swimming

Sad news for the Virginia family: 26-year-old former UVa swimmer Fran Crippen passed away on Saturday while competing in the 10K World Cup Open Water Race in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Crippen family and all those who were close to him before his tragic passing.

Tennis

Virginia’s women’s doubles team of Maria Fuccillo and Rashmi Teltumbde won the ITA Regional Title on Monday at ODU, qualifying the team for the the National Championships next month in New York. The men’s team, meanwhile, swept both the singles (Jarmere Jenkins) and doubles (Jenkins and Alex Domijan) titles at Snyder Tennis Center this weekend, also qualifying for the championships next month.

Golf

The UVa women finished fifth at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington on Sunday, but second-year Brittany Altomare earned co-champion honors with a 2-under 214 performance. The men, meanwhile, finished fifth out of 15 at the US Collegiate Championships in Georgia, completing its fall season.

Women’s Soccer

The 8th ranked Hoos knocked off Duke on Thursday night 2-0 in a match that was scoreless until the final ten minutes. UVa continued its homestand with another ACC win over Wake Forest on Saturday, 2-1. Virginia now stands at 10-3-1 (4-2-0 in the ACC), and plays at 7th ranked FSU on Thursday night.

Cross Country

UVa hosted the second-annual Panorama Farms Invitational on Friday, and finished second in both the men’s and women’s competition. Senior All-American Emil Heineking, however, won the event individually (for the second straight year) with a time of 23:47.79. Both teams return to action in the ACC Championships October 30th in Boston.

Volleyball

It was a tough weekend at home for the Cavaliers, as they dropped matches to Duke (3-0) and Wake Forest (3-1) at Mem Gym on Friday and Sunday, respectively. UVa (9-10, 3-6) heads to North Carolina this weekend for contests at UNC and NC State.

Men’s Soccer

#3 Virginia gave its fans a scare at Klockner Stadium Friday night, but rallied from a late 1-0 deficit to come back and defeat rival Virginia Tech in overtime, 2-1. Greg Monaco knocked in the winner in the 92nd minute to lift the Cavaliers to 9-2-2 (2-2-1). UVa will hit the road for its next match: at Boston College on Friday night.

Field Hockey

In a battle of two powerhouses, Virginia fell short at top-ranked North Carolina on Saturday, 3-2 (despite rallying from an 0-2 deficit). The third-ranked ‘Hoos rebounded with a 3-0 triumph over William and Mary on Monday to improve to 12-2 on the year. Next up is #13 Wake Forest on Saturday at the U-Hall Turf Field.

Football

You know all too well the story of UNC’s thrashing of the Cavaliers on Homecomings weekend. Virginia takes on lightweight Eastern Michigan this Saturday as Mike London’s squad looks to get back on track.

Men’s Basketball

The season hasn’t even begun yet, and the ‘Hoos have already suffered a tough loss. Redshirt junior point-guard (and one of Tony Bennett’s most productive remaining regulars) Sammy Zeglinski had an operation on his left knee Tuesday, and will be out for approximately eight weeks. Virginia begins the regular season on November 12th.

Men’s Golf

The 25th-ranked Virginia men’s golf team won its second consecutive tournament of the season, placing first at The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate this weekend. UVa finishes up its fall season at the U.S. Collegiate in Alpharetta Oct.
24-25.

Field Hockey

Virginia took down Longwood 2-0 on Wednesday in a bit of a tune-up match, and picked up a very big win by knocking off 3rd ranked Princeton at the Turf Field on Friday. The ‘Hoos, who were ranked 4th going into the match, will take their 11-1 record on the road to top-ranked North Carolina on Saturday.

Volleyball

It was a great weekend for Virginia Volleyball, as the ladies scored road ACC wins at Boston College (3-1) and at Maryland (3-0). UVa improved to 9-8 on the year and 3-4 in the conference, and will return to action at home on Friday against Duke. They will also host Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon.

Men’s Soccer

In what proved to be just a slight mismatch, the ‘Hoos destroyed Alabama A&M by a whopping 10-0 score on Saturday. 25th ranked James Madison proved to be much more difficult to score against, and battled Virginia to a 0-0 double-overtime tie on Tuesday. Third-ranked UVa hosts Virginia Tech on Friday night at Klockner.

Women’s Soccer

The 6th ranked Cavaliers suffered their first home loss of the season against 3rd ranked North Carolina on Friday night, falling 1-0 in overtime. They’ll host Duke on Thursday at 7PM, and will host Wake Forest on Sunday at 1:30 PM.

Football

UVa lost its second in a row and fell to 0-2 in conference play Saturday at Georgia Tech. The Cavaliers host North Carolina at 6PM on Saturday at Scott Stadium.

Swimming

The men’s team opened the season with an impressive victory against Florida, 153-145 on Monday. The women fell just short against the defending national champion Gators by a score of 148-150. Both squads do not return to action until October 29.

Women’s Golf

#9 UVa finished fourth in the 18-team Tar Heel Invitational at Chapel Hill this weekend, shooting a 2-under 862 for the tournament. The team finishes up its the schedule next weekend in Wilmington.

Men’s Tennis

Virginia swept both titles at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, OK on Sunday, becoming the fifth school to do so in the tournament’s history. Alex Domijan won the singles title while Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz won the doubles title.

Cross Country

Virginia performed well at the Paul Short Invitational on Friday, as the 12th ranked Cavalier women finished in second place and the 22nd ranked men finished first. Both teams are off this coming weekend.

Field Hockey

The ‘Hoos were knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten on Friday at the Turf Field, dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker in overtime to top-ranked Maryland. Virginia will look to rebound Wednesday against Longwood and on Friday against Princeton – both at home.

Football

We’re all well aware of the shellacking that took place at Scott Stadium on Saturday. Next up: Georgia Tech, in Atlanta, 3:30 on Saturday.

Men’s Soccer

In a clash of ACC powerhouses, UVa came up short against No. 2 UNC on Friday at Klockner Stadium, 1-0. The Cavaliers rebounded with a 2-1 victory over Liberty on Tuesday, but the defending champs are just 1-2-1 in the ACC thus far. That record won’t change for another week, because the next conference game isn’t until next Friday against Virginia Tech. Meanwhile, Virginia will take on Alabama A&M on Saturday and JMU on Tuesday (both at home).

Women’s Soccer

The women fell in a tough road ACC contest on Thursday night at Maryland, but provided the highlight of the week in Virginia athletics by defeating No. 1 Boston College on Sunday at Klockner, 3-2. The 6th ranked ladies take on UNC at home Friday night in their next contest.

Volleyball

After missing numerous chances to take control of the match, Virginia lost a disappointing 3-1 decision to Georgia Tech on Friday at Mem Gym. The ‘Hoos were able to rebound, though, and picked up their first ACC victory on Sunday by defeating Clemson. They’ll travel to Boston College and Maryland this weekend to continue conference play.

Men’s Golf

Virginia finished first at the Gary Koch Invitational in Tampa on Saturday, led by Ben Kholes’ top score of 207 over 54 holes.

Women’s Golf

The women were not in action this week, but I neglected to mention their T-1st, 3rd, and 1st places (respectively) in three days of competition at the Golfweek Conference Challenge last week in Colorado. They will participate in the Tar Heel Invitational this weekend in Chapel Hill, NC.

Cross Country

The team has been off since September 10th, but will return to action this Friday, traveling to Bethlehem, PA for the Paul Short Invitational.

Field Hockey

The 3rd ranked Cavaliers remained undefeated by going 2-0 up north this past weekend, defeating #12 Boston College 3-2 (in overtime) and Cornell 5-2. The girls have their first home ACC game on Friday at 5PM against Maryland.

Football

Virginia trounced VCU 48-7 last weekend in a game that essentially didn’t count because the Cavaliers had already played another FCS opponent, Richmond. The ACC Opener and White-Out at Scott Stadium will take place at noon on Saturday.

Men’s Soccer

UVa went on the road to Clemson and came back with a 1-0 victory, putting the ‘Hoos in the ACC win column and improving their national rank to #3. They also dispatched Longwood last night at home (2-0), and host a big match Friday night against #2 UNC. Liberty also awaits Virginia for a Tuesday match at Klockner.

Women’s Soccer

The women won their ACC Opener against the hated Hokies in Blacksburg, 3-0 on Wednesday night. They haven’t played since, but will take on Maryland in College Park on Thursday and will host Boston College on Sunday afternoon.

Volleyball

Virginia’s recent struggles continued as the Cavs dropped both their matches in Florida over the weekend, 0-3 at FSU and 1-3 at Miami. They return home this weekend and hope to pick up an ACC win on Friday (vs. Georgia Tech) and/or Sunday (vs. Clemson).

The football team may have had a bye week, but plenty of other Virginia teams were in action over the past seven days…

Field Hockey

The Cavaliers remained undefeated with a 4-0 triumph over Lafayette on Saturday in Pennsylvania. Paige Selenski scored twice, while Elly Buckley and Michelle Vitesse scored a goal apiece in the victory. The 7-0, 3rd ranked ladies travel north again this weekend, taking on Boston College on Friday and Cornell on Sunday.

Men’s Soccer

To the surprise of many, the defending champions are 0-1-1 in ACC play after a tough home loss to 12th ranked Wake Forest Saturday night. Andy Lubahn scored the only goal of the match in the 64th minute, and the ‘Hoos were unable to recover despite ramping up their play after the goal. They did, however, rebound Tuesday night with a 2-0 victory over American. Next up for #5 Virginia: a road trip to Clemson (Saturday, 7PM) followed by a home match against Longwood Tuesday night.

Women’s Soccer

In their final non-conference tune-up, the Cavs suffered their first loss of the year at West Virginia on Sunday. The women are now 6-1-1, and will take on the rival Virginia Tech Hokies in the ACC opener Thursday night in Blacksburg.

Volleyball

Virginia dropped a closely contested match against Virginia Tech in front of a sellout crowd at Mem Gym Friday night. The Cavaliers rebounded from the 5-set loss, though, and defeated George Mason 3-0 on Sunday. They will travel to Florida this weekend to take on Miami and Florida State.

Baseball

Baseball, in September? In Charlottesville? Yep.Virginia will take on the Ontario Blue Jays in a scrimmage at Davenport Field on Friday night, and admission is free to all fans. The contest could provide some insight on how the team plans to rebound from its tough Super-Regional loss in 2010, along with a number of new faces after losing many key players to graduation and the MLB Draft.
